RENO, Nev. -Â Nevada Football held its second Battle Born Showdown Saturday, capping the 2023 spring practice session. Thanks to a late 60-yard touchdown run from
Wesley Kommer, the Pack offense scored a 37-34 victory with the modified scoring system.
Wolf Pack fans filled the west stands in a sun-splashed Mackay Stadium, witnessing the first full-game scirmmage of spring for Nevada.
Things opened well for the defense, which jumped to a quick 11-0 lead thanks to tackles-for-loss (worth one point) and defensive stops (three points for a 3-and-out, two points for a stop). Defensive back
Tre Weed got the defense a key three points with a juggling interception of a
Brendon Lewis pass in the first quarter.
But the offense found its footing late in the quarter, getting on the board with
Jamaal Bell's 69-yard catch-and-run for a score from
Shane Illingworth. On the day, Bell led the Pack receivers with five catches for 136 yards, catching one of the two touchdown receptions on the day.
Nevada quarterbacks spread the ball around to a number of targets in the scrimmage, as 11 different Wolf Pack players caught a pass. Pack fans got their first look at Lewis, a transfer from Colorado, and his two-way ability as he went 13-for-23 passing for 88 yards, and found lanes for 47 rushing yards on nine attempts.
Illingworth's day was highlighted by the touchdown pass to Bell, as he went 4-for-8 for 111 yards, and
AJ Bianco was 6-for-11 for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Victor Snow caught Bianco's scoring toss, and finished the day with seven catches for 76 yards.
Overall, the Nevada defense enjoyed a strong performance, especially in the first half. The linebacker corps led by
Naki Mateialona,
Drue Watts, and
Jackson LaDuke brought the physicality early and often, while the defensive backfield of
Isaiah Essissima and
Jaden Dedman at the corners, along with Weed,
Emany Johnson, and
Zeke Robbins, among many others, in the secondary, made things difficult for the Wolf Pack quarterbacks.
The day also provided a first look at many newcomers to the Pack, and players who redshirted 2022 and saw their first action in front of the Wolf Pack faithful Saturday. Bianco, who redshirted this past fall, got his first live reps in front of Nevada fans, and freshman
Jax Leatherwood, who graduated high school early to join the Pack for spring ball, went 3-for-5 for 13 yards in his series. Wide receiver
Kola Babalola, a redshirt freshman, caught a pass for 10 yards.
Along with Lewis, Weed (Eastern Washington), and LaDuke (Oregon), transfers
Ashton Hayes (California),
Sean Dollars (Oregon),
Keleki Latu (California), and
Gerick Robinson (Colorado State) saw their first action in Mackay. Hayes, a local McQueen High graduate, found the end zone and finished the day with 37 yards rushing, while Dollars ran for 33 yards.
Nevada will now head into the spring and summer conditioning and lifting period of workouts, ahead of the start of Fall Camp in late summer. The Pack is scheduled to begin the 2023 campaign Saturday, Sept. 2, at USC, with the home opener at Mackay Stadium set for the following Saturday, Sept. 9, against Idaho.
