SAN DIEGO - Kade Morris went the distance for the first time in his career in a nine-inning game, and second time this season, striking out a career-high 11 San Diego State batters, but the Nevada fireballer was upstaged by counterpart TJ Fondtain, who no-hit the Wolf Pack for the 4-0 win.
Each pitcher set down the first nine batters he faced, and each had faced the minimum even after San Diego State got a single against Morris in the fourth.
San Diego State (15-19, 9-5 MW) broke through with four runs in the sixth. Fondtain helped his own cause by scoring the opening run. He opened the frame by being hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Caden Miller's double, then scored on a fielder's choice from Shaun Montoya.
With the bases loaded a batter later, Cole Carrigg broke things open with a bases-clearing triple to right.
Fondtain retired 24 in a row, the closest threat to his running perfect game being JR Freethy working a full count in the top of the seventh before grounding out to third. Taylor Holder ended Fondtain's run with a four-pitch walk to lead off the ninth, but Dawson Martin would fly out, followed by a Jackson Waller strikeout and a Nolan Wilson fly ball to end the contest. Fondtain would finish the game with 14 strikeouts.
Morris went the distance for the second time this season, the first being a seven-inning outing in a March 3 win over Hofstra. The righty struck out 11 batters and allowed just three hits, two of those coming in the sixth.
Nevada (15-20, 6-12 MW) will aim to even the series Saturday, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.
