RENO, Nev. - An all-around effort from Nevada Friday night led the Pack to an emphatic 18-1 victory in the series opener against San José State.
The Pack offense racked up season highs in runs, hits (16), and doubles (nine), putting things away with six runs in the fifth inning followed by nine in the sixth.
That was more than enough support for starter
Kade Morris, who improved to 2-3 with six strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
Nevada did all of its damage in the middle innings, beginning with
Jeff Bauser's two-run single in the fourth. The Pack then laced five doubles in the six-run fifth, highlighted by
Nolan Wilson's two-run double.
Matt Clayton,
Taylor Holder, and Bauser each added RBI doubles to add to the scoring.
Mason Hirata would highlight the nine-run sixth, smashing a grand slam to left.
Clayton went 3-for-5 with three doubles and an RBI, while
JR Freethy doubled twice and drove in two runs in his 3-for-4 effort. Bauser drove in a team-high four runs, going 2-for-3, and Holder also had two hits and a pair of RBIs.
The teams play the second game of the series Saturday at 4:35 p.m., with the Pack going for its first Mountain West series victory of the season.
