RENO, Nev. - For the third time this conference season, a Mountain West series victory will come down to the rubber game for Nevada, after Saturday's 7-6 loss to San José State.
The teams will settle the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Saturday, the Pack threatened to again walk off another win at home, plating a run in the ninth on Jaxon Woodhouse's RBI single, and having Woodhouse at first as the winning run. But Spartan closer Darren Jansen struck out Nolan Wilson to close out his second save of the season.
The Pack took a 5-3 lead into the eighth, but San José State (12-10, 5-3 MW) put up four runs to take a 7-5 lead. The Spartans got the first two batters on against reliever Peyton Stumbo, and pulled within a run on Jeriah Lewis' RBI single through the right side.
The Pack lead would disappear a pitch later, as Morgan White, who came on for Stumbo, had his first offering sent deep to left by Robert Hamchuk for a three-run shot.
Stumbo fell to 2-2 on the year, charged with three runs on four hits over an inning-plus of work. Spartan reliever Keaton Chase threw scoreless sixth and seventh frames to pick up his second win.
Nevada (12-14, 3-7 MW) took a 5-3 lead in the bottom half of the fifth on Jesse Pierce's two-run homer, which answered a game-tying two-run shot by SJSU's Hunter Durraugh in the top half.
Along with Pierce's homer, Nevada got offense from JR Freethy, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs on the day. Hamchuk was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Nathan Cadena had three hits for the Spartans.
