RENO, Nev. - New Mexico scored in each of the first four innings Friday, sending Nevada to a 9-5 defeat in the series opener at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
The teams will return to Peccole Park Saturday for the second game of the series, set for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The contest will be aired locally on Nevada Sports Net.
Friday, New Mexico (13-8, 4-3 MW) got an unearned run in the first, then added two more in both the second and third innings. The Lobos got nine hits and six runs off of Nevada starter Kade Morris, who fell to 1-3 on the season in the four-inning outing.
Nevada (11-11, 2-5 MW) got a run back in the second, on Taylor Holder's RBI double. But New Mexico quickly added two in the third, and a run in the fourth to get its lead up to 6-1.
Holder was one of four Wolf Pack batters with a two-hit game and at least one RBI. Matt Clayton continued his hot hitting, leading the Pack with a two-run homer in his 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Clayton's homer in the seventh made it 9-4, and Jesse Pierce added an RBI single in the eighth.
The Pack got 10 hits off of Lobo starter Riley Egloff, but could not translate those into runs. Egloff, who improved to 4-1, went seven-plus, allowed five runs total, but just two over the first six innings, as New Mexico built a 9-2 lead.
Deylan Pigford led New Mexico with three hits, including a solo home run, while Lenny Junior Ashby drove in three runs on two hits.
