RENO, Nev. - New Mexico captured the weekend series against Nevada with a 12-1 victory Saturday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
The Wolf Pack mustered just two hits and struck out eight times against Lobo starter Tristin Lively, who improved to 4-1 on the season with the seven-inning outing.
Nevada's (11-13, 2-6 MW) best chance against Lively came in the second. Trailing 2-0 after a Devon Dixon RBI single and a Wolf Pack error in the top half of the frame, the Pack loaded the bases with one out on a walk by
Jaxon Woodhouse and singles from Derek Tenny and
JR Freethy.
But Lively came back, striking out
Mason Hirata and
Matt Clayton to escape the jam.
Reed Spenrath hit a solo homer in the third, and Braydon Runion had an RBi double in the fifth to up New Mexico's lead to 4-0. The Lobos (14-8, 5-3 MW) got their key inning in the sixth, putting three across thanks in part to a two-run double form Dylan Ditzenberger.
New Mexico got seven runs (six earned) on nine hits against Nevada starter
Jason Doktorczyk, who fell to 2-2 on the season.
The Pack scored its lone run in the eighth, loading the bases and getting
Taylor Holder across on a wild pitch from Lobo reliever Wil Bannister.
The teams conclude the series Sunday at 11 a.m. at Peccole Park.
