CORVALLIS, Ore. - Nevada ended up with a split of its two-game series at Oregon State, and of its six-game road trip, after Wednesday night's 12-1 loss to the Beavers.
The Wolf Pack (9-8) returns to Reno to host UNLV for a three-game series beginning Friday night. The first two games of the series will take place at Peccole Park, with Sunday's 1:05 p.m. finale set for Greater Nevada Field.
Tickets for Friday's and Saturday's contests are available through MyNevadaTickets.com, with tickets to Sunday's game at Greater Nevada Field on sale for $12 (all seats GA) at www.renoaces.com. Wednesday, Oregon State returned the favor of a big first inning to the Wolf Pack. A night after the Pack jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, the Beavers put up a five-spot in their opening frame. Two singles, three walks, and a hit batsmen against starter Jacob Biesterfeld set the tone, and it was 3-0 before Dillon Holliday came on to get three outs, but not before two more came across.
Biesterfeld fell to 0-2 on the season with the defeat.
The Pack looked poised to cut into the deficit in the third, as Mason Hirata and Taylor Holder each singled, and Nevada had runners at the corners with one out. But Oregon State reliever David Grewe came in and induced an inning-ending double-play ball from Jeff Bauser to end the threat. In the bottom half, the Beavers made the Pack pay, as back-to-back RBI doubles from Tanner Smith and Kyle Dernedde made for a three-run frame, upping the Oregon State lead to 8-0.
The Pack got on the board in the seventh, on Hirata's bases-loaded single. But the Beavers added three in the bottom half to cap the scoring. Mason Guerra went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead Oregon State.
Hirata and Corvallis native Holder accounted for all four Nevada hits on the night, with two apiece. On the night, the Pack pitchers struck out 13 batters, with Alejandro Murillo, Dorsey Chatham, and Jordan Jackson each notching four.
