RENO, Nev. - UNLV scored in each of the first five innings, putting the Wolf Pack into a deep, early hole and dealing Nevada an 11-4 loss in Friday's series opener.
The teams return for the series' second game Saturday at 4:35 p.m.
Nevada starter
Kade Morris got the first two outs of the top of the first before running into trouble. Jacob Sharp went opposite field for a solo shot to open the scoring, then Edarian Williams kept the inning going with a single.
Morris struck out Austin Kryszczuk on a ball in the dirt, but the pitch went to the backstop, and Kryszczuk reached first to extend the frame. Kade Higgins and Paul Myro took advantage, getting RBI infield singles to make it 3-0.
After the Pack (9-9, 1-3 MW) got one back in its half of the first on
Henry Strmecki's RBI single, UNLV got three more in the second behind an RBI single from Santino Panaro and a two-run homer from Sharp, his second of the contest.
The Rebels (6-10, 2-2 MW) got a run in both the third and fourth innings, then two more in the fifth to up its lead to 10-1. UNLV starter Noah Beal continued keeping Nevada at bay, picking up his first win of the season with a seven-inning outing in which he struck out eight and allowed just two runs.
Morris took his second loss of the campaign, being charged with nine earned runs of 10 over 4.1 innings.
Nevada got three runs in the eighth on a three-run homer from Strmecki, who finished the contest 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
