CORVALLIS, Ore. - Peyton Stumbo was spotted a four-run lead by his offense, and went on to shut down a second Pac-12 team in as many weeks Tuesday. Stumbo struck out a career-high eight Oregon State batters over six innings as Nevada claimed a 5-1 victory in the opener of its two-game series in Corvallis.
The teams close the short two-game set Wednesday at 5:35 p.m.
Nevada (9-7) ambushed Oregon State at the jump. Nolan Wilson and Matt Clayton each singled to start the top of the first, and the bases loaded up with Derek Tenney being hit by a pitch.
Henry Strmecki opened the scoring with an RBI single through the left side, and, two batters later, Jesse Pierce's fly ball to right-center was deep enough to plate Clayton to make it 2-0.
Jaxon Woodhouse got the first of his two RBI singles in the game next, with Tenney beating the tag at the plate to put the Pack up 3-0. The call was challenged by Oregon State, but stood on review. Michael Ball then drove a two-out RBI single down the line in left, bringing in Strmecki with the fourth run of the frame.
Stumbo ran into his only spot of trouble in the bottom half, giving up a two-out, RBI single to Mikey Kane. After runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball, Stumbo struck out Tyce Peterson to escape the jam.
The Beavers (11-5) got two-out singles in the second, but Stumbo was again equal to the task, getting Travis Bazzana to line out to close the frame.
Woodhouse's second RBI single of the game brought in Strmecki in the top of the third, capping the scoring in the contest. Woodhouse and Strmecki were two of four Pack batters with two-hit games on the night, being joined by Clayton and Ball.
Stumbo cruised the next three innings, only allowing a pair of walks. In the sixth, the Beavers again got two-out singles, but Stumbo, who improved to 2-1 with the win, fanned Kyle Dernedde to close out his night.
Morgan White, Michael Sarhatt, and Kolby Kmetko took an inning apiece the rest of the way, holding the Beavers hitless and combining to strike out five.
