Fresno, Calif. - Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium
WP - Roman Angelo (1-2)
LP - Casey Burfield (2-2)
SV - Tommy Hopfe (4)
FRESNO, Calif. - Nevada had its chances, but could not get its baserunners around Sunday, falling 2-0 and dropping its Mountain West-opening series at Fresno State.
It spoiled another strong outing from Nevada starter
Casey Burfield, who went seven innings and struck out a career-high nine batters while giving up just two runs on five hits.
Burfield did well to limit damage in the bottom of the fourth, allowing just one run after the Bulldogs (7-7, 2-3 MW) loaded the bases with none out. Burfield struck out Grady Morgan for the first out, before Sammy Augustine drove in Nikoh Mitchell with a groundout to first. The inning closed without further issue as Burfield got Tyler Davis to ground to third.
Fresno State's only other run came on a one-out solo homer from Bobby Blandford in the seventh.
Fresno's Roman Angelo allowed just three Nevada hits and walked a pair over 5.2 innings, and the Bulldog bullpen held the Pack hitless the rest of the way. Tommy Hopfe came on in the ninth and got his fourth save.
Nevada (8-7, 1-2 MW) stays on the road, heading to Corvallis for a two-game, midweek set at Oregon State. The Pack and Beavers open things up Tuesday night at 5:35 p.m.
