Smrt finishes ninth overall, multiple personal records broken, to wrap Washington State Open

SPOKANE, Wash. – Graduate student Hanah Smrt led the pentathlon squad with a ninth-place finish, along with multiple new personal records broken within the group, to wrap up the Washington State Open Thursday evening.

"Today we were a little rusty with it being the first pentathlon of year, and the first ever for some of our freshman," said multis position group Coach Scott Williamson. "I think we definitely learned a lot about managing a competition. We had some good events here and there and see some things we need to work on. It was great to see Hanah have a new PR in the high jump. With four more weeks until the conference championships, I know we will clean up some mistakes and put ourselves in a position to be successful."

Smrt accumulated 3,455 points, capturing a top-10 finish. Valeria Paez-Rueda finished close behind with her 15th place finish, with 3,356 points. Kate Kadrmas finished 23rd with 3,003 points, and Johanna Haas rounded out Nevada's squad in 26th with 2,711 points.

Smrt, Paez-Rueda, and Haas all shared new personal records in their respective events. Smrt captured a new personal record in the high jump, and finishing tied for fourth, with a mark of 1.66m, beating her previous best of 1.61 earned three years ago at the 2020 Indoor Mountain West Championships, and most recently tied her exact best again at the 2022 Mountain West Indoor.

Continuing the momentum, freshman Haas would gain a new personal record in the shot put with a 10.90m, finishing ninth. Her previous record of 10.55m was earned at the beginning of the season at the Spokane Invitational. Teammate Paez-Rueda finished not far behind, in thirteenth, also recording a new personal record of 10.60m. Kadrmas finished 19th (10.07m) and Smrt 21st (9.31m). For Smrt, this would mark her second new personal record of the day.

In the long jump, Smrt led the group with a third-place finish with her mark of 5.50, just off her personal record of 5.76 from the Texas Tech Open at the end of January. Paez-Rueda finished 12th in 5.23, Haas 14th with her mark of 5.15, and Kadrmas in 23rd with a 4.89.

To wrap up the day, Smrt, Paez-Rueda, and Kadrmas all finished in the top-20 in the 800 meters with 17th, 19th, and 20th place finishes.

Nevada travels next to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational February 10-11, their last competition before the 2023 Mountain West Indoor Championships at the end of the month.
