UNLV defeats Nevada soccer, Pack clinches No. 6 seed in MW Tournament

RENO, Nev. - UNLV defeated Nevada soccer 1-0 at Mackay Stadium Thursday night in the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union, but the Pack clinched the No. 6 seed in the Mountain West Tournament.

Nevada, who punched its first conference tournament ticket since 2013, obtained the No. 6 seed thanks to an Air Force draw against Colorado College and a New Mexico loss at San Diego State Thursday. The Pack will play No. 3 seed Boise State Sunday at 10 a.m. in Laramie, Wyoming.

The Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union started as an aggressive battle as expected, with UNLV firing three shots in the first 15 minutes to start the offensive attack. Junior forward Emily Rich looked to get Nevada on the board with a shot on frame from 10 yards out, but UNLV managed to collect the save.

UNLV looked to take the lead seconds before going into the locker room, but Nevada's defense spoiled that hope. After UNLV fired a shot with 45 seconds to play, the Lady Rebels looked to capitalize off a one-on-one shot opportunity. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Emily McCue was unfazed by the late shot and stretched for the save to keep it scoreless after 45 minutes.

Nevada looked for the go-ahead goal off a pair of shots in the 60th minute, but it was UNLV who struck first. The Lady Rebels capitalized off a corner kick and UNLV's Trinity Buchanan found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

The Pack looked for the equalizer opportunity in the 75th minute by firing a shot on frame from 20 yards out, but UNLV managed to protect the lead with the save. Nevada was unable to get another shot opportunity for the remaining 15 minutes of the match and UNLV took the points in the Silver State Series presented by America First Credit Union.

Nevada's first round match with No. 3 seed Boise State at 10 a.m. Sunday in Laramie, Wyoming, can be viewed on the Mountain West Network. The winner between Nevada and Boise State will take on No. 2 seed Utah State Wednesday at 10 a.m.
