Pack falls to Colorado State

RENO, Nev. – Nevada volleyball falls to the Colorado State Rams 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Virginia Street Gym, dropping to 6-16 overall and 2-9 in Mountain West Play.
 
Mia Fearnley came off the bench and delivered her first three career kills with a hitting percentage of .333 on six attempts. Tehya Maeva tallied eight assists, allowing her to move to 500 career assists in just her first season with the Wolf Pack.
 
The Rams boast a 21-3 overall matchup record against the Wolf Pack as well as an 12-1 away record. In the Mountain West standings, Colorado State sits tied for fourth place with the Fresno State Bulldogs with an 11-9 overall record and 5-4 in conference play. As a squad this season, the Rams lead the conference in hitting percentage as well as in total kills with team averages of .276 for hitting with 13.32 kills per set.
 
The Rams jumped up to an early 4-1 lead over the Pack, but a 4-0 scoring run from Nevada allowed them to tie the match at 5-5 and then again at 6-6 after a block from Clarke answered Colorado State's Malaya Jones' kill. The Rams went on another 4-1 run to regain their lead at 12-8, but the Pack continued to battle and answer back after kills from Clarke and Snyder along with a service ace by Maeva brought the score within one. Colorado State reached the 20-point mark after a kill from Kennedy Stanford brought the Rams to a five-point lead. Colorado State continued their momentum, extending their lead to seven points to take the first set 25-17.
 
Colorado State took an 8-3 lead to begin the second set with a 4-0 scoring run heading into the first media timeout. The Rams took over towards the middle of the second set, putting up an 18-point lead over Nevada to win the set 25-7, going up 2-0 on the match.
 
Starting off the third set with a refreshed lineup, Nevada opened with the first point with a service error by the Rams. Two service aces by Colorado State's Ruby Kayser followed by a kill from Karina Leber put the Rams up by three. Answering back, Lexi Applebach recorded her first service ace of the match along with an attack error called on Colorado State to bring the Pack within one. Mia Fearnley recorded her first ever career kill which helped jumpstart a spark as a 4-1 Wolf Pack scoring run tied the game 8-8, forcing Colorado State to call a timeout. A 6-0 scoring run gave the Rams a six-point lead, going up 17-11. Fearnley's second kill of the match brought the Wolf Pack within eight, but an attack error on Nevada with a kill from Colorado State's Naeemah Weathers helped the Rams go back up by 10 points. A kill from Colorado State's Taylor Pagan solidified the match and set at 25-15 for the Rams to complete the sweep over the Wolf Pack 3-0.

Nevada will travel to Fresno State for their second meeting with the Bulldogs this season Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. before returning to Virginia Street Gym Saturday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. for their second matchup against the San Jose Spartans.
