Pair of Boise State goals gives Nevada soccer heartbreaking loss

BOISE, Idaho - A pair of second half goals in the 78th and 79th minutes allowed Boise State to defeat Nevada soccer 2-1 Thursday night.

Junior forward Emily Rich scored her fifth goal of the season in the 16th minute, moving into the top 10 in program history for single season goals and points. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ally Larkin matched a career-high seven saves.

After Boise State began with an aggressive offensive attack of four shots through the first eight minutes, Nevada countered with some high-pressure offense of its own. Nevada fired a pair of shots on frame while drawing a corner kick before Rich did what she does best: score.

As she had previously done twice in Nevada's last match, Rich blasted through the Boise State defense and found the back of the net to give the Pack an early 1-0 lead. Rich's third goal in the last two matches was done through just 57 minutes of on-field time.

Nevada's back line tamed the Boise State offense following Rich's goal and managed to carry the one-goal advantage going into the locker room.

Following a back-and-forth battle to start the second half, the Pack got a great offensive chance at the net. The ball, however, hit the crossbar and Boise State managed to recover to maintain the deficit. The Broncos looked to respond with an offensive chance of their own, but Nevada's back line stood firm and Larkin capped off the defensive effort by retrieving the ball.

Boise State managed to climb back from the deficit in the 78th and 79th minute with a pair of goals to swing the advantage. The Pack looked for the equalizer goal with three shots in the final 10 minutes of play, but Boise State held on to complete the comeback.

Nevada, who still sits in fifth place in the Mountain West standings, continues its quest to finish in the top six and clinch a bid to its first conference tournament since 2013. The Pack will play at Utah State Sunday at 12 p.m.
