Second half goal pushes New Mexico past Nevada soccer

RENO, Nev. - A second half goal allowed New Mexico to defeat Nevada soccer 1-0 at Mackay Stadium Thursday night.

Fifth year defender Gabby Brown led Nevada with three shots, needing just seven more to set the program's career shots record. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ally Larkin recorded six saves in the net, having five or more saves in five of the last six matches.

Trading shots halfway through the first half, Nevada looked to its bench to maintain the momentum. Just one minute after going on the pitch, Brown quickly helped the Pack by drawing a penalty kick.

New Mexico goalkeeper Alli Davis, however, kept it a scoreless match off a diving penalty kick save. Nevada looked to respond with another shot on goal in the next minute, but Davis came up with the save once again. The Pack's final shot of the first half went out top to keep it a 0-0 match going into the locker room.

Nevada's offense continued to put pressure on the Lobos, with the Pack collecting three shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Larkin came up with a pair of saves, but the Lobos found the back of the net to take the one-goal lead with under 25 minutes to play.

The Pack looked to answer and initially got the ball in the back of the net in the 88th minute. The goal, however, was waived off due to an offsides call. Nevada's final two shots of the match were blocked and saved by New Mexico that allowed the Lobos to take the win.

Nevada returns to Mackay Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on San Diego State, the current leaders in the Mountain West standings. Sunday's match celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the University of Nevada and is Alumni Weekend. The first 250 fans receive an exclusive University of Nevada 150th Anniversary soccer scarf.
