Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

San Diego State holds off late Nevada comeback

SAN DIEGO - Nevada women's basketball cut a 20-point deficit down to single digits in the fourth quarter, but San Diego State held off the Pack 80-70 on Thursday at Viejas Arena.

Junior guard Alyssa Jimenez led all scorers with a career-high 17 points while matching a season-high five steals. Graduate student forward Megan Ormiston and junior guard Victoria Davis each added 12 points for the Pack.

Nevada jumped out to the early lead off a 3-pointer by Jimenez and a basket by Ormiston, but the Aztecs knocked down a 3-pointer and a layup to take the advantage. Freshman forward Kennedy Lee turned a San Diego State turnover into a bucket that allowed Nevada to retake the lead, scoring seven of her nine points in the first quarter.

After the Aztecs answered with a 3-pointer, junior Lexie Givens converted a layup to tie the game as the first quarter wind down. San Diego State, however, sank another 3-pointer to take a 20-17 lead that carried over after the first 10 minutes.

San Diego State carried its momentum by outscoring Nevada by eight points in the second quarter, hitting six of its final seven field goals to move ahead by double digits at halftime.

Jimenez opened the third quarter with a basket and a foul to go with a layup following a steal. The Aztecs, however, used 69.2 percent third quarter shooting to jump to a 66-47 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Pack cut the deficit down to single digits with 2:50 left to play, but San Diego State knocked down a 3-pointer a minute later to push the lead back out to 11.

Nevada returns to Lawlor Events Center on Saturday to take on Air Force at 1 p.m. for Armed Forces Appreciation Day.
