TUCSON, Ariz. - Cristina Moll Alles fought back from down a set, then from a 5-5 tie in the third set, to outlast Fresno State's A.C. Hummel at No. 4 singles, closing out Nevada's 4-3 upset of the top-seeded Bulldogs in Thursday's quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championship in Tucson.
In a match that lasted just under four hours, No. 8 seed Nevada (10-10) captured four singles matches after dropping the doubles point to nationally-ranked No. 65 Fresno State (20-4) to earn its first appearance in the event's semifinal round since joining the Mountain West in the 2012-13 athletic year. The Pack will face UNLV in Friday's first semifinal at 10 a.m.
Moll Alles dropped the opening set, 6-3, to Hummel, before clawing back to take the second, 6-4, to send the match into a deciding third set. There, Moll Alles battled back time after time, first going up 2-1 after Hummel took the set's opening game, then fighting back from down 3-2 to go up 5-3.
The tension mounted when Hummel broke Moll Alles during a two-game swing to pull even at 5-5. But, despite bending, Moll Alles did not break, rolling to win a sixth game, then going up 40-0 in the clincher before closing it out.
It was but one gutsy performance on a day full of them for Nevada. At No. 5,
Selina Turulja rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Carlotta Nonnis Marzano to get the Pack on the board. After Fresno State got wins at Nos. 1 and 6, taking a 3-1 lead,
Milka Genkova, at No. 3, grinded out a 7-6 (7) tiebreaker in the opening set against Cristina Flaquer before coasting to victory with a 6-1 second set.
All eyes shifted to the Nos. 2 and 4 matchups. With Moll Alles hanging on in the third set at No. 4, Mountain West Freshman of the Year
Mariana Campino was going blow-for-blow with fellow freshman Matilde Magrini in a battle of the conference's top rookies. This time, it would be Campino emerging the victor, 7-6 (2), 7-5, evening the match at 3-3 and setting up Moll Alles' to bring it home.
