SAN JOSE - A two-run double from San José State's James Shimashita in the seventh inning spoiled a Nevada comeback and sent the Pack to a 6-5 defeat in the series opener at Excite Ballpark.
Nevada (20-16, 12-7 MW) came alive with a four-run top of the sixth, highlighted by
Landon Wallace's bases-clearing double to center which put the Pack up, 5-4. Wallace would finish the night 2-for-3 with the three RBIs, while Josh Zamora added an RBI double in his two-hit night.
Pack starter
Peyton Stumbo recovered from surrendering a three-run homer to Hunter Dorraugh in the bottom of the first, ending up going six innings with three strikeouts, and allowing just two runs on three hits after the first frame.
Stumbo would start the seventh, but be lifted for
Russell Hicks after walking Hamchuk to start the frame. But the Spartans would get to Hicks, with Hernandez drawing a walk, and, two batters later, Shimashita doubling down the left-field line to drive in the go-ahead pair.
Hicks would take his first loss of the year, being charged with a run on two hits with three strikeouts over the final two innings.
Darren Jansen would get the win, in relief, for the Spartans (20-18, 10-9 MW), with Brady Hill getting the six-out save.
The teams will square off in the second game of the series Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
