RENO, Nev. -Â Nevada moved one step closer to clinching at least a share of its first Mountain West regular-season title and the top seed at next week's conference tournament with Wednesday's 4-1 victory over UNLV.
The Pack (16-7, 4-1 MW) could clinch as early as Thursday. If both Utah State and San Diego State lose their respective matches Thursday, that would guarantee Nevada a share of the regular-season crown and the top seed. If one of Utah State or San Diego State wins Thursday, the Pack can clinch with a victory in Saturday's regular-season finale against San Diego State. That match is set for noon at McArthur Tennis Center.
Wednesday, Nevada got off to a solid start, getting the doubles point thanks to a 6-0 blanking of UNLV (11-13, 1-5 MW) by the tandem of
Matheo Coupu and
Delmas N'Tcha, followed by the point-deciding, 6-3 win by
Loris Zisswiller and
Satchel Benn at No. 2.
The Pack took the first set in four of the six singles matches to put itself in position to claim the match. Benn, at No. 4, got the first win, a 6-4, 6-3 decision over UNLV's Zac Brodney. After UNLV got to within 2-1, the Pack took the next two matches to close the book, with N'Tcha wrapping a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Milos Dabic, and
Daniel Dudockin clinching the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Zach Garner.
