UP NEXT
The Pack hits the road for a two-game swing to Wyoming (Feb. 26) and Boise State (March 1), before returning home for Senior Night, March 5, against San Diego State.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada completed the home-and-home sweep of San José State Thursday night, routing the Spartans, 90-60, in San Jose.
Grant Sherfield went 10-for-13 from the field, and posted his fourth double-double of the season, going for 25 points and 10 assists. Sherfield flirted with a triple-double, grabbing six rebounds.
Sherfield was one of four Wolf Pack players to score in double figures, along with
Desmond Cambridge Jr. (17 points),
Will Baker (16), and Tré Coleman (14). As a team, the Pack shot a season-best 66.0 percent (35-for-53).
SCOUTING UNLV
UNLV (16-11, 8-6 MW) has won a modest two-straight heading into Tuesday's contest, but sent a message with a 72-51 bulldozing of Colorado State Saturday.
Bryce Hamilton leads UNLV with 21.5 points per game and 69 3-pointers, while Royce Hamm Jr. scores 8.4 points a game while pulling down a team-best 9.4 rebounds a game.
A LITTLE MORE LEVEL, THIS TIME
Nevada heads into this second meeting with UNLV with a healthy
Grant Sherfield, which could make a major difference in fortunes. In the first meeting of the teams, back on Feb. 1, Sherfield missed the game with a foot issue, and, without its All-Mountain West point guard, the Pack offense made just 19 field goals and passed out a season-low seven assists in a 69-58 loss.
In last year's two wins over the Runnin' Rebels, Sherfield averaged 16.5 points and 7.50 assists, while shooting 46.2 percent (12-for-26) from the field and 36.4 from 3-point range. He posted a double-double of 15 points and 11 assists in the opener, an 89-60 Wolf Pack win.
SHERFIELD NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Monday morning, point guard
Grant Sherfield was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the second time this season, and third time in his career.
Over last week's two wins over San José State, Sherfield averaged 23.0 points and 9.00 assists while posting FG/3FG/FT percentages of 60.0/75.0/87.5. His week included a 25-point, 10-assist double-double in Thursday's 90-60 win.
CAMBRIDGE JR. ON A TEAR
Redshirt senior guard
Desmond Cambridge Jr. has been absolutely on fire over Nevada's past six games, averaging 21.3 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 54.2 percent (45-for-83) from the field and an incredible 58.7 percent (27-for-46) from 3-point range.
Over the games the week of Feb. 7-13, a split against Colorado State and at Utah State, Cambridge Jr. averaged 31.5 points while shooting 74.2 percent (21-for-32)overall, and 72.2 percent (13-for18) from 3-point range.
Cambridge Jr. has also ratcheted up the defensive intensity, this season. Not only does he draw the assignment of defending the opponent's top guard, but, in Mountain West play, he leads Nevada in blocks (21) and steals (25), while ranking second in blocks and third in steals in the conference in MW-only games.
