RENO, Nev. - Nevada volleyball took a 3-2 win against the Wyoming Cowgirls on Thursday afternoon at the Virginia Street Gym.
Kayla Afoa was the leader of the Pack offense with 17 kills in a .240 hitting percentage. Afoa also recorded two service aces and defended the back row with 13 digs in the match.
Andrea Alcaraz continued to assist the Pack offense with 23 assists, while Rylie Romero recorded 17.
Gabby McLaughlin was the leader of the Pack in digs, with 20 recorded in the match. McLaughlin was also a major offense player for the Pack, with 11 kills in the contest and two service aces.
Bella Snyder defended the net for the Pack with six block assists. Snyder also recorded four kills.
How it happened
The Wyoming Cowgirls took the first set on a long run against the Pack. The Cowgirls had an early lead as they jumped on the scoreboard first, but the Pack tied the game 4-4. Both teams battled through the set, but the Cowgirls got a three-score run that extended their lead to 21-18. Nevada tied the game at the 22-22 mark, and a service ace by Afoa got the set point for the Pack. The Cowgirls reversed the score and won the first set 27-25.
Nevada took over from the beginning in the second set, as they got on the scoreboard with a 12-8 lead that forced Wyoming to call a timeout. The Pack continued with the lead and closed the set 25-23.
Nevada's offense came out to play in the third set, as the team registered 16 kills with a .452 hitting percentage. The squad continued with their momentum as they jumped on the scoreboard early on in the set. The Pack stayed on the lead heading into the media timeout with a 15-13 score. Nevada stayed ahead on the scoreboard and completed the set on a 25-19 score.
The Cowgirls did not back down after the Pack put out a 16-12 lead in the third set. Wyoming reversed the score to take a 19-17 lead, which forced Nevada to call a timeout. The Pack tied the game 20-20, but the Cowgirls made a five-score run that closed the set 25-21 and led the match to a deciding fifth set.
Wyoming kept their momentum going as they opened the set on a two-score run. The Pack tied the game 2-2 and reversed the score, leading the match in the media timeout. Nevada kept the momentum going and closed the set with a 15-9 on the scoreboard.
