SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's Battle for the Fremont Cannon will be the 48th all-time meeting between Nevada and UNLV. The Pack leads the overall series, 28-19, and owns the Fremont Cannon, having taken it back in 2020 and successfully defended it last season with a 51-20 win at Mackay Stadium on Nevada Day.
ABOUT UNLV
UNLV (4-7, 2-5 MW) enters Saturday's contest on a six-game slide, after falling, 31-25, at Hawai'i late Saturday night. The Rebels are led by a pair of defenders in Austin Ajiake (120 tackles, 11.0 TFL, 4.0 sacks) and Adam Plant Jr. (56 tackles, 12.5 TFL, 7.0 sacks) who have combined for 23.5 tackles-for-loss and 11.0 sacks.
THE BATTLE FOR THE FREMONT CANNON
Nevada and UNLV will battle Saturday for the heaviest rivalry trophy in college football: the 545-lb. Fremont Cannon.
Nevada has won 13 of the past 17 meetings between the teams, dating back to 2005. During that span, 10 of the Wolf Pack's 13 wins have come by more than seven points, while all four of its losses have come by less than a touchdown.
THE PACK LIKES ALLEGIANT
Saturday's contest will be the second between Nevada and UNLV at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Allegiant Stadium hosted its first Battle for the Fremont Cannon in 2020, in which the Wolf Pack recaptured the cannon with a 37-19 victory. In that win, Carson Strong threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns, Toa Taua (86 rushing yards) and Devonte Lee each rushed for a score, and Romeo Doubs had seven catches for 219 yards and a touchdown.
WILSON'S RECORD IN THE GAME
Nevada head coach Ken Wilson is hardly any stranger to The Battle for the Fremont Cannon. While this will be his first chapter of the rivalry as the Wolf Pack's head coach, he took part in 19 previous meetings as a member of the Nevada coaching staff.
Overall, Wilson is 17-2 against UNLV as a member of the Wolf Pack football coaching staff, going 9-1 during his stint from 1989-98, and 8-1 during his stint from 2004-12.
SANDERS RECEIVING NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Nevada safety Bentlee Sanders, one of the seniors being honored Saturday night, has earned significant national recognition in recent weeks, for his outstanding play this season.
Oct. 18, Sanders was named to the Associated Press midseason All-America Team, grabbing one of the safety spots alongside Georgia's Christopher Smith. This Monday (Oct. 24), Sanders was again honored, being named one of 12 semifinalists for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to college football's top defensive back.
Sanders has been a one-man takeaway machine in 2022, having a hand in eight of Nevada's 18 takeaways. He is one of eight players tied for second in the country with five interceptions, and is tied for third in the country with three forced fumbles.
TACKLING MACHINE
On top of his ball-hawking skills, Bentlee Sanders has been Nevada's tackling machine this season. Heading into Saturday's season finale, Sanders leads the Wolf Pack with 75 tackles, and his 60 solo tackles lead all Mountain West defenders.
STARCK IS THE CONSTANT
While Nevada's offensive line has undergone many changes during the season, one constant has been tackle Grant Starck.
Nevada has used nine different offensive-line starting combinations over 11 games this season, and Starck is the only lineman to start every single contest.
CAMPBELL, CASTEEL DEEP THREATS
Wide receivers Dalevon Campbell and B.J. Casteel combined for 183 receiving yards over eight catches Saturday night against Fresno State, an average of 20.9 yards per reception. Campbell led the way with three catches for a career-high 120 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. It went down as the second 100-yard receiving game by a Pack receiver this season.
Casteel, meanwhile, finished with five catches for 63 yards and a touchdown, continuing his strong run of play in the second half of the season. The numbers upped his Nevada-leading totals to 43 receptions, 471 receiving yards (428), and three touchdown catches.
