UP NEXT
The Wolf Pack returns home for its only contest at Lawlor during this stretch in which it plays three of the next four on the road.
Nevada hosts Utah State for a 7 p.m. tip Saturday, Jan. 29.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada won its ninth-straight game against Fresno State with Friday night's 77-73 home victory.
Kenan Blackshear had one of his best games in a Nevada uniform, scoring a season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, to go with five rebounds and two steals.
Nevada posted season bests in field-goal percentage (56.0 percent) and steals (13), with five players recorded two steals apiece.
Grant Sherfield led the Pack with 17 points and seven assist, while
Will Baker was 6-for-7 from the field for 14 points.
SCOUTING COLORADO STATE
Colorado State (15-1, 5-1 MW) has won four-straight since dropping its only decision of the season, a 79-49 defeat at San Diego State Jan. 8.
The Rams, 73-53 victors over Air Force Saturday, are led by the play of David Roddy (18.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 57.7 FG pct.) and point guard Isaiah Stevens (15.1 ppg, 5.50 apg).
RECENT SUCCESS AGAINST THE RAMS
Nevada has won nine of its last 10 meetings against Colorado State, entering Tuesday, with the only defeat over that span being a 92-91 loss at Moby two seasons ago.
Last year, the teams met just once, that being a rescheduled game March 5 after the originally-scheduled two-game series was postponed due to COVID issues. In that game, Nevada fell behind, 18-5, in the opening seven minutes, before coming back and getting the 85-82 victory on
Grant Sherfield's go-ahead 3-pointer with two seconds on the clock.
MOUNTAIN WEST'S BEST OVER LAST FIVE SEASONS
Nevada's conference run of play has been the best among Mountain West teams since 2016-17, as the Wolf Pack is 69-25 (.734) in Mountain West regular-season play since the start of the 2016-17 campaign. That figure is the best winning percentage in the conference over that time (San Diego State is next, at 66-27, .710).
AMONG THE MOUNTAIN WEST LEADERS
Through the games of Jan. 22, Nevada ranks second in the Mountain West, in conference-only games, in scoring with 73.6 points per game and with 14.80 assists per game. The Pack is also top-three in blocks (3.20 bpg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.10).
Individually,
Grant Sherfield is fifth in the conference with 18.8 points per game, and second with 7.00 assists per game while topping the loop with a 2.80 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also ranks third with a 88.5 free-throw percentage.
SCORING ON A TOP-RANKED DEFENSE
Fresno State came into Friday night's matchup at Lawlor with the Mountain West's top defense, and ranked second in the nation, in opponents' scoring at 56.5 ppg. And Nevada, facing that challenge, more than answered, putting up 77 points and shooting a blazing 56.0 percent for the game, including a first half in which it shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23).
Four of the five Nevada starters shot at least 50 percent, led by
Will Baker (6-for-7) and
Kenan Blackshear (6-for-9). The only Nevada starter to not hit the 50 percent mark was point guard
Grant Sherfield, who finished the game close to it, going 6-for-14 and leading the Pack with 17 points.
HOT FIRST HALVES
Observers can't say that the Pack has been getting off to cold starts, of late. In each of the past two contests, Nevada has shot at least 50 percent over the opening 20 minutes, including a scorching 65.2 percent (15-for-23) Friday against Fresno State.
Nevada has shot at least 50 percent in the first half in six games, now, this season, although the Pack has trailed at the break in each of the past two (Jan. 17 vs. Wyoming, Jan. 21 vs. Fresno State).
