Pack splits doubleheader with MW’s top team

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A late-game rally in game two helped lead the Nevada baseball team to a split doubleheader with the Mountain West's top team, San Diego State, on Saturday. The Aztecs took game one, 15-7, while the Wolf Pack was victorious in game two, 10-6.

It was the tale of two different ball games as Nevada (9-13, 6-8 MW) held a sizeable lead in game one, but the Aztecs (17-7, 12-5 MW) fought back to claim victory in that contest. In game two it was San Diego State that held the upper hand for the majority of the game, but the Wolf Pack stormed back in the late innings to win, 10-6, and even the series at one game apiece. In game two Nevada scored eight runs in the final three innings to erase a 6-2 deficit.

Dillan Shrum, in his first game since March 14, and Dario Gomez led the Wolf Pack with five hits and added four RBI each between the two games. Joshua Zamora collected two home runs on the day, hitting one in each game, for his first long balls of the season, and also added a team-high five RBI. On the mound for the Pack, Tyler Cochran and Kade Morris both threw 2.0 innings of work and did not surrender a run.

GAME 1
How It Happened

-Nevada got on the board first after a leadoff solo shot to left from Tyler Bosetti in the top of the first, Bosetti's first home run of the season.
-The two teams traded a couple of runs back and forth until the fourth when the Pack plated three runs to take a 6-2 lead. Nevada got RBIs from Jacob Stinson and Joshua Zamora in that frame, as a single from Stinson scored one and Zamora scored two on his first home run of the season.
-San Diego State stormed back in a hurry in the bottom half of the fourth, tying the game at 6-6 on a grand slam from Wyatt Hendrie.
-The rest of the game was all Aztecs as they outscored the Wolf Pack 9-1 the remainder of the game to take a 15-7 victory in game one.
-Wolf Pack starter Alejandro Murillo was dealt his third straight no-decision, while Shane O'Malley, who relieved Murillo in the fifth was saddled with the loss.

GAME 2
How It Happened

-The Aztecs quickly jumped out in front, scoring four runs in the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead, which would remain intact until the top of the fourth.
-Nevada cut the deficit in half by plating two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI triple from Gomez and a single from Shrum.
-San Diego State answered with two runs of its own in its half of the fourth to quickly push the lead back out to four. It was the last time the Aztecs would score in the game, however.
-Down by four in the top of the seventh, the Wolf Pack went to work, scoring five runs in that frame.
-Three of those five runs in the seventh came from Zamora's second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left center. Later in the inning, Gomez scored from third on a wild pitch and Matt Clayton scored the fifth and final run of the seventh after Brady Hormel singled up the middle.
-Nevada tacked on a few insurance runs in the eighth after Gomez drove in two on a single up the middle and Shrum scored Gomez all the way from first on a bloop hit that just fell into right field.
-Kade Morris and Tyler Cochran threw the last four innings for the Wolf Pack and not only did they not allow any additional runs, but the pitching duo also did not allow the Aztecs a single hit in those final four frames. Morris earned the win to bring his record to 2-1 on the year.
