PALO ALTO, Calif.– Despite a strong defensive performance throughout the night, the University of Nevada softball team (9-6) fell to Stanford (9-2), 1-0.
Sophomore pitcher Kendall Fritz (4-2) took the loss in the circle for Nevada. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on nine hits and striking out four. Nevada's offense was led by Chelie Senini and Sadaria McAlister, who both went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Senior Kenzi Goins also recorded a single in the game's first inning.
How It Happened
Nevada's offense saw early production in the first thanks to McAlister drawing a walk and Gutierrez getting hit by a pitch to position runners at first and second with one out. Then, Goins' single to right loaded the bases for Nevada, but Stanford's defense came through to record two-consecutive outs and hold the Pack.
Stanford scored its lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly to center.
McAlister got Nevada's offense going in the third after doubling to left center, but Nevada was kept scoreless.
Senini's lead-off single and stolen base in the fifth put a runner in scoring position for Nevada. Next, Gutierrez got hit by a pitch for the second time of the game to put runners on first and second with one out, but Stanford's defense tallied the next two outs to keep Nevada scoreless.
Senini reached first on a walk in the seventh to keep Nevada alive. Next, Sadaria McAlister reached first on a fielder's choice and then stole second to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Then, Gutierrez reached first and then advanced to second on a Stanford throwing error to keep the inning alive, but Stanford forced a Nevada ground out to end the game.
