RENO, Nev. -Â Nevada's first home weekend ended in a split following Saturday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Saint Mary's.
The Pack (4-5) got off to a positive start, nabbing the doubles point for the second time on the weekend, but Saint Mary's (3-8) rolled off four-straight wins in singles play to claim the dual.
Saturday's dual was the second between the teams in six days, as Nevada captured the first meeting, 4-3, March 14.
Benjamin Campi and
Loris Zisswiller clinched Saturday's doubles point with a thrilling 7-6 (4) victory at the No. 3 position over Caelen Potts and Matis Bot. The win came after the teams had split the Nos. 1 and 2 matches.
But Saint Mary's turned the tide in singles play. The Gaels' Fabian Roensdorf evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over
Juan Batalla at No. 3, then straight-sets wins for Bot (over
Ambroise Marchand) and Damon Kesaris (over
Delmas N'Tcha) put the Wolf Pack on the brink.
James Watt would clinch the match for Saint Mary's at No. 2, coming back from a set down to defeat
Isaac Nortey, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Campi, at No. 5, and Matheo Coupu, at No. 6, had their matches go unfinished while leading. Campi led Boris Reckow, 6-7, 7-5, 2-1, and Coupu led Felipe Rincon, 6-2, 3-6, 4-3, when Watts won the clinching point.
Nevada will begin Mountain West play next Friday, March 26, hosting Air Force in a 1 p.m. dual.
