TEMPE, Ariz. – A pair of four-run innings late in the game pushed Arizona State past Nevada in a single game on Tuesday by the final of 13-4.
Tuesday's game was tied 3-3 through 5.5 innings until the Sun Devils (5-2) posted back-to-back four-run innings in their half of the sixth and seventh. Those two frames broke the game wide open as Arizona State took a commanding 11-3 lead. The Wolf Pack (4-4) got a run back in the top of the eighth, but ASU scored two more in the bottom half of that inning to take a 13-4 lead.
Arizona State scored first in the game, getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. The Wolf Pack answered in the third with a single run to tie the game. With
Dawson Martin standing on third base with two outs, freshman
Jacob Stinson stood through an eight-pitch at-bat, fouling off four of those eight pitches, and with the count full, he popped a single to left that scored Martin for the Pack's first run of the game. Nevada then took the lead in the fourth after three straight singles to start the inning plated
Dario Gomez, and a groundout later in the frame scored
Dillan Shrum, giving Nevada a 3-1 lead. The Sun Devils answered immediately though as they chased starting pitcher
Shane O'Malley in the fourth and tied the game at 3-3. From there it was all ASU with the two big frames in the sixth and seventh.
O'Malley threw 3.2 innings in his second start of the season and was charged with three earned runs on five hits. Nevada had seven pitchers enter Tuesday's game, with
Kade Morris being saddled with the loss. Gomez led the way for Nevada at the plate as he went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of doubles, and two runs scored.
Nevada will be off from competition for 10 days before returning to the diamond for a three-game series at USC beginning March 12.
