Pack's run ends in semifinals

LAS VEGAS – Nevada's run at the 2021 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Championship came to an end in Friday's semifinals, as the Pack fell, 77-70, to top-seeded San Diego State.

Forward Warren Washington scored a career-high 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting with nine rebounds, just missing his second double-double of the tournament. Grant Sherfield had 25 points to go with six assists and five rebounds, while Desmond Cambridge, Jr. finished with 17 points.

The trio scored 61 of the Pack's 70 points, and for the tournament combined for 136 of Nevada's 159 points.

Washington scored the first four Pack points of the game as Nevada took an early 6-3 lead. But San Diego State's Jordan Schakel scored eight-straight points to put the Aztecs in front, 11-6, with less than five minutes elapsed.

The Aztecs (22-4) used nine 3-pointers to hold off the Pack's repeated attempt to retake the lead, led by three from Matt Mitchell, who scored 24 points.

Nevada tied the game at 30-30 with three minutes left in the half on Washington's alley-oop dunk, but the forward picked up his second foul 27 seconds later and exited for the rest of the half. San Diego State took advantage, ending the half with a 7-2 run to go into the break with a 37-32 lead.

Triples from Jordan Schakel and Mitchell contributed to an 8-2 Aztec run to open the second half, putting the Pack into a 10-point hole at 45-35. Another 3-pointer from Butler extended the lead to as much as 13 at 60-47 with 10 minutes to go before the Pack made one final chase.

Sherfield's jumper in the lane got the Pack as close as 73-67 with just over a minute to go, but San Diego State would ice the game from the line over the final minute.
