Nevada takes season-opening win at the wire

STOCKTON, Calif. - Nevada women's tennis opened the new campaign in victorious fashion Saturday in Stockton, Calif., defeating host Pacific, 4-3.

The dual went down to the wire in singles play, where, at the No. 3 slot, senior Milka Genkova completed a dramatic 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) comeback win to capture the winning point. It was Genkova's second point-clinching victory of the day, as the transfer from St. John's paired with redshirt junior Cristina Moll Alles at No. 1 doubles for a 7-6 (7-0) win over Pacific's Klara Kosan and Zoe Eberle which sealed the doubles point for the Pack (1-0).

Anastasia Luneva and Carla Del Barrio set the tone in doubles action, rolling to a 6-1 victory over Maile Brilhante and Ella LeRoy at the No. 3 spot. With the point already in the bag, Anastasia Petrova and Selina Turulja made it a clean doubles sweep for Nevada, grinding out a 7-6 (7-5) victory at the No. 2 spot over Pacific's Maya Lopez and Danielle Zamora.

The point would make the difference in the dual, as the teams split the six singles matches. Moll Alles canceled out a Pacific's (0-1) victory in the No. 2 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zamora, and the Pack put the Tigers on the brink, at 3-1, with Del Barrio's three-set comeback win (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) over Brilhante at No. 5.

Pacific made a late run at stealing the match, getting wins from Kosan and LeRoy over Luneva and Isabella Nunez at Nos. 1 and 6, respectively, to knot it up at 3-3.

At that point, all eyes turned to the battle at No. 3 between Genkova and Lopez. With the match in the balance, Genkova rebounded from dropping the opening set, 0-6, to even the match before outlasting Lopez in the third-set tiebreaker.
