UP NEXT
The Wolf Pack makes its penultimate road trip of the conference season next week, heading to the Bay Area to face San Jose State in a two-game series. The games against the Spartans are set for Saturday, Feb. 13 and Monday, Feb. 15.
ALL OR NOTHING
Nevada opened this weekend's series against Boise State with a dramatic 74-72 win, thanks to
Grant Sherfield's game-winning bucket with 2.9 seconds remaining.
That brings the Pack into Sunday's finale with a chance to earn its fourth series sweep of Mountain West play. In fact, of six previous series prior to this weekend, the Pack had only split once (Dec. 18 and 20 vs. Air Force).
MR. CLUTCH
Sophomore point guard
Grant Sherfield has created quite the highlight reel of clutch shots and moments over just 20 games in a Nevada uniform.
Friday, Sherfield scored the final four Wolf Pack points against Boise State, capping it with the game-winning fadeaway with 2.9 seconds left for the 74-72 win. It marked the third time this season that Sherfield has hit a game-winning or game-tying shot for the Pack in the game's final 10 seconds.
Along with Friday's winner, Sherfield hit the game-winning 3-pointer with six seconds left in Nevada's 69-66 win at Nebraska on Nov. 26. Jan. 9 at San Diego State, Sherfield hit another triple with six seconds left to tie the game at 67-67, before the Aztecs' Trey Pulliam hit a buzzer-beater to steal the win.
SERIES WITH BOISE STATE
Nevada leads the all-time series against the Broncos, 49-28, and has won nine of the past 10 meetings after Friday night's win. The Pack had won eight-straight against the Broncos before having that run snapped in the last meeting, a 73-64 defeat in Boise on Feb. 1, 2020.
Nevada has beaten Boise in each of the past five meetings at Lawlor, dating back to the 2016-17 campaign. The Pack coaching staff boasts impressive head-to-head records against Boise State, as head coach
Steve Alford is 6-1 all-time (4-0 with New Mexico, 2-1 with Nevada) against Boise State, and head-to-head against Bronco head coach Leon Rice, while associate head coach
Craig Neal went 6-3 against Rice's Bronco teams while New Mexico's head coach from 2013-17.
CAMBRIDGE, JR. COMES OUT FIRING
Redshirt junior guard
Desmond Cambridge, Jr. had one of his best performances of late in Friday's win over Boise State, scoring a team-high 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including a 4-for-9 effort from deep.
He bounced back nicely from scoring just seven points in Tuesday's win over UNLV, and Friday's performance aligned more closely with Sunday's series-opening game against UNLV in which he scored 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting with a 3-for-5 showing from behind the arc.
Friday against Boise State, Cambridge, Jr. scored Nevada's first five points, helping the Pack get out to a strong start against the Broncos.
A YOUNG TEAM LEARNING TO WIN
Nevada in 2020-21 is a team without a scholarship senior, and with a number of newcomers to the roster. A big challenge with a youthful roster is teaching young players how to win close games and execute in crunch time. Despite the Pack having five losses in conference play, none of those defeats have come by more than seven points, and the five decisions have come by a combined total of just 21 points, an average margin of defeat of 4.2 points. Also, in those five losses, the Pack has had a lead or been tied in the final three minutes four times (Jan. 22 at Wyoming is the only exception).
Friday's win over Boise State marked the second in a row in which the Pack came back from a halftime deficit. Nevada trailed Boise State, 33-28, at the break. Tuesday against UNLV, the Pack trailed, 30-26, at halftime, and fell behind, 33-26, early in the second half, but came back for the 72-62 victory. The Pack had been 0-5 overall and 0-4 in Mountain West play this season when behind at halftime prior to these past two second-half comebacks.
