Nevada bounces back to defeat Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Nevada softball team (8-4) bounced back from a loss to Idaho State (1-1), 7-0, in the morning to defeat Pacific (3-3), 4-0, on Friday evening at the Libby Matson Tournament. Freshman Blake Craft (4-2) tallied the win for Nevada against Pacific, tossing a two-hit shutout against the Tigers.

Junior Julia Jensen (1-1) recorded the loss for Nevada against Idaho State. Jensen gave up three runs and struck out one in three innings of work. Nevada was led offensively by senior Sadaria McAlister, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Chelie Senini and Sierra Mello each tallied a hit.

In the second game, Nevada was paced by Sierra Mello, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman Chelie Senini starred as well, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Senior Sadaria McAlister and junior Lauren Gutierrez each recorded a hit. Junior Jessica Sellers registered an RBI in the top of the third.

Blake Craft started in the circle and picked up the win for Nevada. The right-hander threw a two-hit shutout and struck out one.

GAME 1

How It Happened

Idaho State jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of singles.

The Pack held Idaho State for two-consecutive innings before the Bengals picked up another run in the fourth.

Idaho State added four more runs in the fifth and the sixth to edge Nevada 7-0.

GAME 2

How It Happened

Senini singled to left to begin the game. Then, McAlister drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. On the next play, Gutierrez reached on a fielder's choice, but moved Senini to third. Mello stepped up and recorded an RBI single to shortstop to put Nevada on the board.

Nevada pushed across three runs in the third thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Gutierrez and Mello. The Pack got its third run of the inning on Jessica Sellers' RBI to short, forcing Pacific's defense to take the out at second and allowing Gutierrez to score from third.

Pacific prevented Nevada from scoring in the game's final four innings, but Craft's pitching and Nevada's defensive play powered through to give Nevada the win on Friday's finale.

UP NEXT

Next up for Nevada is a doubleheader tomorrow at 12:15 (PT) and 2:30 p.m. against Idaho State and Pacific. The game against Pacific will be streamed by the West Coast Conference.
