SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Nevada baseball team opened the 2021 season with a 4-0 loss to Cal Poly Friday night.
Drew Thorpe got the start for the Mustangs (1-0) and pitched a gem, not allowing a hit until senior
Wyatt Tilley broke up the no-hit bid with a single in the sixth inning. Thorpe tossed 7.2 innings and surrendered just that one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Wolf Pack (0-1) got one more hit in the game, a two-out single by newcomer
Dario Gomez in the ninth.
Cal Poly recorded seven hits in the ball game and got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on a single up the middle from Myles Emmerson. The Mustangs tacked on three more runs in the fifth, getting two of the three on an RBI double by Tate Samuelson and the third on a wild pitch.
After the three-run fifth by Cal Poly, Nevada got three solid innings on the mound from redshirt sophomore
Shane O'Malley. O'Malley entered the game in the sixth and tossed three scoreless innings and surrendered just one hit to the 10 batters he faced. Redshirt junior
Jake Jackson got the start in the season opener and was saddled with the loss after throwing 4.2 innings and giving up four runs, although only two of the four were earned.
Nevada and Cal Poly will play game two of the four-game series tomorrow with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
