LAS VEGAS - Behind its first two gold medals of the 2021 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday, Nevada swimming and diving claimed the top spot in the team standings through Day 2.

Junior Julia Adamczyk claimed the 200 IM title and the quartet of Josien Wijkhuijs, Wiktoria Samula, Adamczyk, and Caitlyn McHugh topped the field in the 400 medley relay to cap the night session. Those wins headlined a 393-point night for Nevada which lifted the Pack from a tie for third to start the day into the lead position, with 499 points.
The Pack leads UNLV by 10 points, with San Diego State in third at 454 points.

Adamczyk earned the Pack's first gold of the meet, touching the pad in 2:00.39 to claim the 200 IM crown. Adamczyk's swim led a dominant Pack showing in the event, as sophomore Benedict Nagy took bronze in 2:00.75, senior Donna Depolo took fifth, and junior Gianni Pitto eighth.

Two events later, Nevada's 400 MR quartet took the lead for good on the opening leg and outlasted San Diego State by nearly two seconds, turning in a winning time of 3:37.14. Wijkhujis, leading off the relay on the backstroke leg, overtook UNLV's Katsiaryna Afanasyeva in the second 50 of her leg, and handed the rest of the Pack quartet a lead of over a second, which held up the rest of the way.

The 200 IM was the second event of the day in which the Pack had three finishers in the top eight. In the afternoon, at the diving portion of the championships, held at the Air Force Academy, diver Jessie Nowotny claimed bronze in the 1-meter springboard event with a score of 276.30, with Isabel Vazquez (275.25) fourth and Linnea Sorensen (245.90) seventh.

Senior Caitlyn McHugh got the swimming portion of the night session off to a solid start for the Pack, claiming silver in the 500 free with a time of 4:48.84. McHugh led into the final 100 yards of the race, but was overtaken by Wyoming's Katelyn Blattner, who touched in 4:47.33.

Sophomore Emma Brady earned the Pack a crucial 24 points with a sixth-place finish in the 500 free.

Friday's schedule is set to begin with the swimming prelims at 11 a.m. PT, and the finals set for a 6:30 p.m. start. The events on the swimming docket for the penultimate day of the meet are the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and the 200 free relay. In diving competition, the 3-meter springboard championship will be contested, with prelims set for 11 a.m. PT. The consolation final will start at 1:15 p.m. PT with the championship final set for a 2 p.m. PT start.
