UP NEXT
The Wolf Pack opens up Mountain West play against New Mexico at Lawlor Events Center Saturday, Jan. 1. The contest begins a two-game home stand which includes hosting Wyoming, Jan. 4.
LAST TIME OUT
Nevada ran its season-best winning streak to five with Saturday's 68-63 victory over LMU.
Point guard Grant Sherfield posted his fifth-straight game scoring at least 20 points, finishing with 24 on the night. Sherfield scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including a late stretch in which he scored six of eight Wolf Pack points to overcome a 56-55 deficit.
Will Baker scored 13 points with six rebounds for the Wolf Pack, while Desmond Cambridge Jr. added 10.
SCOUTING KANSAS
No. 6/6 Kansas (9-1), like the Wolf Pack, both brings a five-game winning streak into Wednesday night's contest, and saw its last game action Dec. 18. The Jayhawks, sixth in the country in scoring (85.8 ppg) and third in field-goal percentage (51.9), are led by the play of Ochai Agbaji (22.0 ppg, 56.1 FG pct.) and Christian Braun (16.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 62.6 FG pct.).
Kansas was originally scheduled to host Harvard Wednesday night, but that contest was canceled Dec. 26.
NOT THE PACK'S FIRST TIME, AT ALLEN FIELDHOUSE
Wednesday night's contest will be Nevada's third-straight trip to Allen Fieldhouse in the all-time series with Kansas. In its last trip to Lawrence, the Pack came away with a 72-70 victory Dec. 1, 2005, behind a career-high 35 points from Nick Fazekas, who made a key block to preserve the win.
NEVADA AGAINST TOP-10 OPPONENTS
Nevada will face an opponent ranked in the top 10 of the Associated Press Poll for the third time in three seasons, when it squares off with No. 6 Kansas.
The Pack faced a top-10 San Diego State squad twice in 2019-20, and, prior to that, made a 22-point comeback to defeat No. 6 (No. 2 seed) Cincinnati, 75-73, in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.
SHERFIELD NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grant Sherfield was named the Mountain West Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 13-19 after his standout performance in wins over Minnesota Duluth and Loyola Marymount.
Sherfield, one of the top point guards in the country, averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 6.50 assists over the Wolf Pack's wins over Minnesota Duluth and Loyola Marymount last week. The junior also shot 53.3 percent (16-for-30) from the field, 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from behind the arc, and 93.8 percent (15-for-16) from the line as Nevada stretched its season-best winning streak to five.
Dec. 15 against UMD, Sherfield posted his second double-double of the season, going for 28 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the 98-62 win. He also finished with nine assists, coming up just one helper shy of notching Nevada's first triple-double since January 1979.
Three days later, Sherfield was key in Nevada's 68-63 win over LMU, scoring 20 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including a late stretch in which he scored six of Nevada's eight points to overcome a late 56-55 deficit.
SHERFIELD AMONG NATION'S TOP POINT GUARDS
Point guard Grant Sherfield's current five-game stretch has brought his season numbers to among the best among the nation's point guards.
Through Dec. 27, Sherfield ranks eighth in the country in assists per game (6.50) and 25th in scoring (20.0 ppg). He is the only player in the country averaging at least 20 points and six assists per game.
