RENO, Nev. – Nevada's dynamic duo was at it again.
Backcourt mates
Grant Sherfield and Desmond Cambridge Jr. combined for 45 points and seven 3-pointers in Tuesday's 79-66 victory over Pepperdine.
Sherfield nearly notched Nevada's first triple-double in over 42 years, just missing the feat by two rebounds, finishing with 24 points, 10 assists, and eight boards. It was Sherfield's third-career double-double, with all three being of the points-assists variety.
Cambridge Jr. wrapped the night with 21 points and a 5-for-10 showing from behind the arc, adding six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.
It was the third-straight game in which both Sherfield and Cambridge Jr. eclipsed the 20-point mark.
The Pack's performance was also a testament to the team's durability and ability to respond to adversity. One week after bouncing back from a 27-point loss to capture the Crossover Classic title, Nevada, hours after learning that head coach
Steve Alford would be isolated for 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19 Tuesday morning, responded under the guidance of assistant coaches
Kory Barnett and
Bil Duany, and director of player development
Glen Worley.
Nevada (4-4) gave a preview of its game-deciding 32-8 second-half run late in the first half. Trailing, 30-29, with two minutes to go in the opening half, Cambridge Jr. and Sherfield scored six-straight, lifting the Pack to a 35-32 lead at the break.
After Pepperdine opened the second-half scoring to cut the Pack lead to one at 35-34, Nevada hit the throttle, going on its big run over the span of just over seven minutes. Four-straight points from
Will Baker put the Pack up three, and five-straight from Sherfield forced a Wave timeout with 15:22 to go and the Pack up 44-36.
The lead swelled into double digits on Baker's layup off a Wave turnover out of the timeout, and, a few possessions later, Cambridge Jr. sandwiched a
Daniel Foster triple with two of his own to make it 59-42. Cambridge would cap the short 11-0 run with another triple, and the Pack was in control at 67-42 with 10:44 left.
Mike Mitchell Jr. led Pepperdine (2-7) with 12 points, and was held to just three on 1-for-5 shooting in the second half.
Warren Washington was in double digits for the Pack, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Baker posted eight points with seven rebounds.
Nevada makes its final non-conference road trip with a wraparound weekend in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, visiting North Texas (Dec. 4, 11 a.m. PT) and UT Arlington (Dec. 7, 5 p.m. PT).
