SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Nevada and Washington ran neck-and-neck for much of Wednesday's clash until a quick burst gained the Pack enough separation to claim an 81-62 victory to wrap the Mammoth Sports Construction Crossover Classic.
The Pack (3-4) closed the trip with two-straight wins, and a 2-1 overall mark. The event's title will be determined with the result of Wednesday night's South Dakota State-George Mason contest.
The Pack and Huskies (4-3) were not separated by more than four points for nearly 20 minutes of game action, until 10-straight Nevada points turned a two-point game into a 61-49 Pack advantage with 10:35 to play.
Grant Sherfield, who finished the game with a team-high 23 points, hit a free throw, then fed Daniel Foster for a corner triple which got the Pack to a 55-49 lead. A Washington turnover led to a technical foul on Huskies head coach Dan Hopkins, which led to another free throw from Sherfield.
After another defensive stop, Desmond Cambridge Jr. hit a jumper, followed by another stop and a transition 3-pointer from Sherfield to make it a 12-point game.
Cambridge Jr. scored 21 points and hit a pair of free throws following a technical foul on Washington's Terrell Brown Jr. to get Nevada up nine at 63-54. Kenan Blackshear then hit a corner triple on the resulting possession to complete the five-point stretch, and the Pack were never threatened the rest of the way.
Brown Jr. was the Huskies' top scorer with 19 points.
Nevada returns home for a Nov. 30 contest against Pepperdine before heading out for its final trip of the non-conference slate, a two-game Texas swing at North Texas (Dec. 4) and UT-Arlington (Dec. 7).
