RENO, Nev. – Nevada shot 51.9 percent and hit 10 3-pointers Friday night, running past Fresno State, 73-57, in Friday's series opener at Lawlor Events Center.
Sophomore guard
Grant Sherfield continued his tear through the Mountain West, leading all scorers with 23 points, his fifth-straight 20-point performance. The Pack (9-5, 4-3 MW) also got 13 points apiece from
Desmond Cambridge, Jr., and
Warren Washington, while
Kane Milling went 3-for-5 for nine points off the bench.
Nevada took over right out of the second-half gate, opening the frame with a 10-2 run to balloon a five-point halftime lead into a 13-point cushion at 46-33. Washington scored the first four of the half, with triples from Sherfield and Cambridge, Jr., forcing a Fresno State timeout just two and a half minutes in.
Fresno State (5-4, 3-4 MW), behind 15 points apiece from Orlando Robinson and Isaiah Hill, tried to shoot its way back into the game, but the Pack defense held the 'Dogs to just nine second-half field goals as the margin between the teams never fell under eight points.
After Destin Whitaker's triple brought Fresno State within eight at 58-50, with just over 10 minutes remaining, it was
Alem Huseinovic who got the Pack offense going again, draining a deep ball from the wing to get the lead back to 11. Washington would score four-straight points, as he went 5-for-10 from the field on the night, to make it 65-50 with just over seven minutes to play.
The lead got to as much as 18 on Milling's triple with a minute to go, capping a night in which the Pack hit 10 from behind the arc, and finished the game 28-for-54 from the field overall.
Cambridge, Jr., grabbed a Nevada career-best eight rebounds, while Washington pulled down seven, with Nevada out-rebounding the Bulldogs, 37-26.
