Sykes takes the helm of Nevada's football operations

Industry veteran and former NFL player comes to Nevada from SDSU

The University of Nevada has hired Jashon Sykes to oversee the football program's operations.

Sykes, who will serve as the senior associate athletics director for football operations, will oversee all aspects of the program's day-to-day operations, including budget management, travel, practice and game operations, community outreach and engagement with campus operations.

"We are thrilled to have someone with Jashon's experience and expertise join the Wolf Pack family," said head coach Jay Norvell. "He brings a great knowledge and background in the industry and he has hit the ground running with our program."

Sykes has served as the vice president of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Committee for Directors of Football Operations and he spent the last seven seasons at San Diego State, including the last five as the assistant athletics director for football operations.

"I'm honored to be a part of the Wolf Pack family," Sykes said. "Having spent time in the West Division of the Mountain West, Nevada has been a program that's well respected under Coach Norvell's leadership. I'm excited about the opportunity to reach many heights with Coach Norvell and the Pack."

Sykes replaces Vince Hug, who spent the last three seasons overseeing football operations before moving to the NFL for an opportunity with the Los Angeles Rams this summer.

A Southern California native, Sykes was a three-sport star at Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., before moving on to Colorado, where he was a standout linebacker for the Buffs. He earned second-team All-America accolades during his career at Colorado and left as the school's 10th-leading tackler of all-time.

Sykes later played professionally for the Denver Broncos, spending the 2002 season on the practice squads before playing in 19 games, with eight starts, over following two seasons with the Broncos. He also was with Washington in 2005. He later began a coaching career with the Broncos, serving as a training camp assistant coach and an intern, before moving into operations.

He returned to his alma mater, working in recruiting and operations before becoming the Buffaloes' director of football operations in 2011-12.

Sykes has bachelor's degree in ethnic studies from Colorado (2002). He and his wife, Qiana, have two daughters, Joslyn and Autumn, and a son, Semion.
