Game Recap: Softball | | Josie Copley

Nevada falls to Long Beach State and Utah Valley on day two

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The Nevada softball team dropped its two games on the second day of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Pack fell to Long Beach State, 9-2 in the morning game before Utah Valley won the afternoon contest, 5-3.

The Pack struggled offensively and defensively in the first game, only recording one hit while committing seven errors. However, it bounced back in the second game, tallying 11 hits and only committing one error. Blake Craft started against Long Beach State for her second collegiate start but was retired to Julia Jensen in the second inning. Jensen pitched the majority of the game, four innings, before Jana Pope had her first appearance.

The pitching staff against Long Beach State allowed only three earned runs but had 14 hits against them.

Nevada came back from a short break to compete against Utah Valley and put up two runs in the first inning thanks to a single from Sierra Mello that preceded Kenzi Goins' RBI single. Mele Tausinga continued the hitting thread with a triple to right field, scoring Goins pushing the Pack up, 2-0.

The Pack tacked another run on after Charli McLendon singled to right field in the bottom of the third, 3-0. It was looking like a complete game until the top of the sixth when Utah Valley broke the game open, scoring four runs and sealing the comeback.

Kendall Fritz got the ball against Utah Valley and pitched five innings before Craft came in for the final two. Ultimately Craft took both losses today but the Pack is back in action tomorrow, Feb. 8 against Oregon at 10:30 am PT.
