Nevada tunes up for road trip with win

RENO, Nev. – Nevada got back into the win column Monday, using a second-half surge to put away William Jessup, 86-64, at Lawlor Events Center.

The Wolf Pack (4-1) now hits the road for its second trip of the campaign, a two-game excursion which includes games Friday at Grand Canyon (6 p.m. PT) and next Monday, Dec. 14, at San Diego.

Junior point guard Grant Sherfield paced Nevada with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting in Monday's victory, while Warren Washington battled his way to 18 points and five rebounds inside. Freshman forward Tré Coleman made the first start of his career, hitting a pair of triples and finishing with seven points.

The Wolf Pack pulled away just before the under-12 timeout of the second half. Leading 48-39, Nevada scored 10-straight points, capped by Washington's and-1 with 11:16 to go, to swell the lead to 19 and take control.

The Warriors, playing their fifth exhibition against a Division I team Monday, cut into the lead some, making it 62-50 with 8:48 to play, but another Nevada run dashed any comeback dreams. Zane Meeks hit a 3-pointer to get the Wolf Pack lead to 15, and capped a 9-0 burst with a dunk to make it 71-50 with just over seven minutes remaining.

After missing its first four attempts, Nevada found its touch, shooting 54.2 from the field in the contest. Coleman's 3-pointer 3:22 into the contest put Nevada up 9-0 before the Warriors rallied to knot it up at 12-12 just three minutes later.

Desmond Cambridge would immediately hit a triple the next time down the court, giving the Wolf Pack a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way, although the Warriors would find ways to stay within range. William Jessup got as close as four at 34-30 with 2:08 left in the half, but Sherfield would get the Wolf Pack back in gear, scoring five points over the half-ending 7-2 run.

Jayden DeJoseph led William Jessup with 14 points, going 3-for-11 from behind the arc as the Warriors put up 35 3-point attempts in the contest, connecting on 10. Miles Corey and Tim Strijaous also reached double digits for the Warriors, finishing with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
