PHOENIX – A scoreless stretch of over four minutes late in the second half doomed Nevada Friday night at Grand Canyon, as the Lopes scored 15-straight points to take control and defeat the Pack, 87-77.
Nevada (4-2) took a 62-60 lead on
Warren Washington's turnaround with 10:27 to play, and momentum appeared to be with the Pack, as it built its run to 8-0. But the Pack would miss its next four attempts and turn the ball over twice over the next four minutes, while Grand Canyon (4-0) hit five of its next six attempts, capped by 3-pointers from Jovan Blacksher, Jr., and Mikey Dixon to take a 75-62 lead with 6:30 to play.
The Pack continues on to its final stop of the trip, visiting San Diego for a 6 p.m. Monday tip.
Desmond Cambridge, Jr., led the Pack with 24 points, going 6-for-13 from behind the arc.
Grant Sherfield scored 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting while
Warren Washington rounded out Nevada's double-digit scorers with 10.
The Lopes held off late Nevada charges with red-hot shooting, finishing the night 57.7 percent from the field (30-for-52). Blacksher, Jr., led the Lopes with 22 points, hitting three triples over his 7-for-14 night, and Alessandro Lever scored 19 points primarily behind a 9-for-11 showing from the line.
Each team made over half its shots in the opening half, with Nevada shooting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) and Grand Canyon 57.1 percent (16-for-28).
The Pack opened the contest 5-for-14 before making its next nine, capped by K.J. Hymes' dunk, to take a 37-31 lead. Nevada had trailed, 22-15, with 9:02 left in the half before those nine-straight baskets fueled a 22-9 stretch over five-plus minutes.
Nevada took a 44-43 lead at the break, but opened the second half with five-straight misses as the Lopes went ahead, 51-46.
