SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In a game with a lot of similarities to yesterday's contest against Sacramento State, the Nevada women's basketball team found itself on the winning side once more, defeating the Hornets 62-53 Sunday afternoon.
The Wolf Pack moves to 3-0 on the young season and completed the weekend sweep of Sacramento State after also defeating the Hornets, 74-61, on Saturday. Senior
Nia Alexander led the Wolf Pack in scoring, totaling 18 points, a career-high at Nevada. Alexander's overall career high is 20 points, set during her time at San Francisco. Junior
Amaya West also reached double figures as she finished with 13 points and added six rebounds. West has scored in double figures in all three games this season. Nevada had two players post eight rebounds in the game, junior
Da'Ja Hamilton, which marked a career high, and sophomore
Alyssa Jimenez.
In a similar theme to yesterday's game, Nevada came out to a hot offensive and defensive start. The Pack began the contest on a 9-0 run and did not allow Sacramento State to score until the 5:36 mark of the first quarter. From there Nevada stretched its lead out to 12 and ended the opening 10 minutes with a 10-point advantage. A 3-pointer by freshman
Kenna Holt, her first collegiate points, with 5:40 left in the second quarter pushed the Pack to a 16-point lead, its largest of the first half. Like yesterday, the Hornets began to chip into the Nevada lead as the first half drew to an end, closing the gap to eight points.
The Wolf Pack was strong in the third quarter though, and did not allow Sacramento State to grab the lead at all, unlike yesterday. The Hornets turned on their offensive shooting late in the fourth, knocking down four triples in the final two minutes, but the lead was too great to overcome, pushing Nevada to victory.
Nevada will host Fresno Pacific for its next contest this Friday, Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. inside Lawlor Events Center.
