SAN DIEGO -Â Nevada (4-2) closes its two-game, six-day road trip Monday night when it visits San Diego (0-1) for a 6 p.m. tip.
Monday's game will be available for streaming on the WCC Network and broadcast on ESPN Radio 94.5 FM with John Ramey on the call.
SERIES HISTORY
The Wolf Pack and Toreros will meet for the 16th time, but the first in 12 years when the ball tips Monday night.
In that last meeting, San Diego defeated Nevada, 65-51, at the Jenny Craig Pavilion Nov. 18, 2008.
UP NEXT
Nevada returns home to prepare for its first series of its Mountain West schedule, hosting Air Force Friday, Dec. 18 (7 p.m.) and Sunday, Dec. 20 (3 p.m.) at Lawlor Events Center.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite shooting 45.8 percent from the field and hitting nine 3-pointers on its end Friday night, the Pack struggled to contain Grand Canyon on the opposite end of the court, as the Lopes shot a blistering 57.7 percent (30-for-52) with nine triples of their own to defeat Nevada, 87-77.
Desmond Cambridge, Jr., set his Nevada career highs with 24 points and six 3-pointers in the contest, while
Grant Sherfield scored 16 points with five assists.
Warren Washington rounded out the Pack's double-digit scorers with 10 points to go with four rebounds.
The Pack shot 54.8 percent (17-for-31) from the field in the opening half, and led, 62-60, midway through the second before a 15-0 Grand Canyon run put them into a hole from which they could not climb out.
SCOUTING THE TOREROS
San Diego (0-1) will play just its second game of the campaign when it hosts the Pack Monday. The Toreros dropped their opener, 83-56, at UCLA on Dec. 9.
Redshirt junior guard Joey Calcaterra paced the Toreros in Westwood with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including a 4-for-5 showing from behind the arc. Fellow redshirt junior guard Frankie Hughes added 10 points.
Up front, senior forward Yauhen Massalski pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds while adding nine points and a pair of blocks.
In the loss at UCLA, San Diego shot just 31.1 percent (19-for-61) and were beaten on the boards by a 50-31 margin.
WRAPPING UP THE TRIP
Nevada aims to close out its second road trip of the season on a winning note Monday, following Friday night's 87-77 loss at Grand Canyon.
Early on this season, the Pack is 2-1 away from home, having won both games at the Golden Window Classic in Lincoln, Neb., from Nov. 25-26, before Friday's setback.
FINDING THE FLOW
Replacing four starters from a season ago, as well as having just one senior on the 14-man roster, presents the challenge to any team of finding a rhythm and gelling on the court.
Nevada's offense has shown solid progress on that front over the past two games, despite the split record. After reaching the 70-point mark in just one of the first four contests (70 points against Pacific on Nov. 30), the Pack has scored 86 and 77 points in its past two games, and shot a combined 50.0 percent (60-for-120) from the field.
CAMBRIDGE, JR., HEATS UP
Redshirt junior guard
Desmond Cambridge, Jr., was a highlight for Nevada Friday despite the loss at Grand Canyon, scoring 24 points and going 6-for-13 from behind the arc.
The 24 points and six triples were both Nevada bests for Cambridge, Jr., who transferred to the Pack in 2019 following two seasons at Brown.
It was just the second double-digit scoring performance for Cambridge, Jr., in a Nevada jersey, following his 18-point effort in Nov. 26's win at Nebraska. But his performance from 3-point range Friday was encouraging, as he had entered the game just 6-for-33 from deep over the first five contests.
WASHINGTON FINDING HIS FOOTING
Redshirt sophomore forward
Warren Washington has put together a good three-game stretch on the stat sheet, averaging 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and shooting 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the field.
Washington, playing his first season with Nevada after sitting out 2019-20 following his transfer from Oregon State, has started all six games for the Pack in 2020-21. He's steadily become a larger part of the offense, scoring 40 of his 51 points and hitting 14 of his 18 field goals over this current three-game run.
DOUBLE DIGITS AGAIN FOR SHERFIELD
Sophomore point guard
Grant Sherfield continued his streak Friday of being the only Wolf Pack player to score in double digits in every game this season, going for 16 at Grand Canyon.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native posted his first 20-point effort in a Nevada uniform this last Monday, hitting the mark right on the nose on 6-for-10 shooting with six rebounds and eight assists in the win against William Jessup.
On the year, Sherfield is the Pack's leader in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (29, 4.83 apg), as well as in free throws made (29) and attempted (35).
INTO THE STARTING FIVE
Sophomore forward Grant Meeks made his debut in the Nevada starting five Dec. 7 against William Jessup, and remained there Friday at Grand Canyon.
Meeks scored 15 and 18 points off the bench in consecutive games against Pacific (Nov. 30) and San Francisco (Dec. 2), respectively, going a combined 11-for-19 from the field with 19 rebounds. That included a double-double of 18 points and 11 boards in the victory over Pacific.
Through the first six games of 2020-21, Meeks is building off of a promising freshman season in which he averaged 6.4 points and 3.4 rebounds over 16.6 minutes per game. This season, he's at 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and his minutes average has gone up to 19.7 per contest. Additionally, Meeks has started well from behind the arc, shooting 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from distance.
