Pack outlasts UTEP, 37-21

EL PASO, Texas (AP)Cristian Solano threw two touchdown passes to Elijah Cooks, Kelton Moore ran for two fourth-quarter scores, and Nevada beat UTEP 37-21 on Saturday night.

Solano was 13-of-19 passes for 182 yards with an interception and added 100 yards rushing on 10 carries.

UTEP (1-1) opened the second half with a 17-play, 75-yard drive that lasted nine minutes, 59 seconds and was capped by Kai Locksley's 1-yard touchdown run to make it 21-21 but the Miners never again crossed midfield. Brandon Talton made a 27-yard field goal with 1:49 left in the third quarter before Moore scored on runs of 5 yards and 1 yard in the fourth quarter.

Solano hit Cooks for a 28-yard touchdown to cap a nine-play, 75-yard that made it 14-all with 3:02 left in the first half. On UTEP's next play from scrimmage, Tyson Williams picked off a pass and, three plays later, Solano and Cooks connected for a 20-yard TD.

Treyvon Hughes had 17 carries for 80 yards and scored two first-half touchdowns for UTEP.

Toa Taua had 43 yards rushing and a score on 10 carries for Nevada (3-1)


Postgame notes – UTEP
-Nevada ends non-conference play with a 3-1 record, marking the first 3-1 start since 2014.
-Head coach Jay Norvell earned the first non-conference road win of his Nevada tenure.
-Senior QB Cristian Solano got his first start of the season and second of his career. His other start came last season against Fresno State.
-Solano threw the first TD pass of his collegiate career to Elijah Cooks in the second quarter, tying the game at 14. He finished the game with two touchdown passes and 182 passing yards.
-Solano became Nevada's first 100-yard rusher of the season after he rushed for a career-high 100 yards on 10 carries.
-Junior QB Malik Henry made his Wolf Pack debut in the second quarter and was 2-for-2 for 21 yards on his first drive.
-The Nevada defense recorded three interceptions during the game. The last time the Wolf Pack snagged three interceptions in a game was the 2018 NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl win. All three interceptions (sophomore DB Jordan Lee, junior LB Lawson Hall, sophomore DB Tyson Williams) were the first of their careers.
-Nevada had an extra point attempt blocked in the fourth quarter, marking the first blocked extra point against the Wolf Pack since the Portland State game in 2018.
-True freshman PK Brandon Talton continues to be perfect when kicking field goals. Talton hit a 27-yard field goal in the third quarter to move to 9-for-9 on the season.
-Williams led the Nevada defense with 11 total tackles, one shy of tying his single-game career-high. This is his second double-digit tackle performance of the season.
-Sophomore DT Dom Peterson has recorded at least 1.0 tackle for loss in five consecutive games and in seven of the last eight games. He finished today's game with one sack and a career-high nine tackles.
-Nevada has forced at least one turnover in nine consecutive games.
-Sophomore RB Toa Taua collected his second rushing TD of the season, and eighth of his career, early in the second quarter.
-Sophomore WR Cole Turner recorded his first reception of the season in the second quarter that went for 14 yards.
-Junior WR Elijah Cooks hauled in two touchdown passes for the second time this season and third time in his career. He finished the game with four catches and a career-high 82 receiving yards.
-Nevada scored 21 points in the second quarter, the most it has scored in a quarter this season and most since it also put up 21 points in the second and third quarters against Colorado State last season.
-Nevada outgained UTEP, 403-278, in total yards.
-The all-time series between Nevada and UTEP is now 3-1 in favor of the Wolf Pack.
