RENO, Nev. - The Nevada volleyball opened the 2019 season with a split day one at the Sacramento State Invitational. In the morning match the Pack won, 3-1 over the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield but fell to the Griffs of Canisius, 3-2.
Landmarks were met however,
Lee Nelson recorded his 50th win and
Dalyn Burns recorded assist number 2,000 in her career.
Nevada 3, CSU Bakersfield 1
The Pack lost the first set, 25-21 but bounced back in the second taking it, 25-14. The Pack kept the momentum going in to the third, winning it, 25-16. In the fourth and final set, Nevada won it 25-21.
Over the course of the match the Pack held the Roadrunners to a .062 hitting percent while Nevada posted a .246 clip.
Freshman
Sydney Petersen led the Pack with 11.0 block assists with the team having 18.0 total.
Kayla Afoa recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs in the contest while
Kassie McGill recorded a .412 hitting percentage and a .471 kill percentage, highest on the team with 8 kills on 17 attacks.
Canisius 3, Nevada 2
In the first five-set match of the season, the Pack dropped three sets to two. The Wolf Pack took sets one (25-23) and four (25-10) but was forced to a fifth and deciding set where it fell 15-12.
Afoa and Burns both recorded double-doubles with Afoa having 18 kill and 18 digs while Burns had 58 assists and 16 digs. Petersen (11),
Brianna Souza (13),
Camryn Rocha (12) all had double digit kill numbers while Petersen led the team in kill percentage with a .478.
As a squad, Nevada hit .208 in the evening match while Canisius had a .204.
Next up for the Pack is a single match to wrap up the Sacramento State Invitational, tomorrow at 1:30 pm PT as it takes on host team, Sacramento State.
