Pack drops series to San Diego State in close game

RENO, Nev. - The Nevada softball team dropped the series to San Diego State after a close, 3-2, loss to the Aztecs on Sunday in the rubber match. The Pack is now 21-14, 6-3 on the year.

Kendall Fritz started in the circle and pitched a complete game, her ninth of the season. The freshman allowed three earned runs in the contest but pitched six shutout innings after the first. Fritz is now 8-4 on the year.

Haley Burda was the lone multi-hit player, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and double credited to her name. Sierra Mello, Ashley Salausa, Rachel Rodriguez and Lauren Gutierrez were the other members to have single hits in the contest.

The Aztecs put three runs up on the board in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. The Pack responded in the second inning with two runs scored but could not find a way to get the third across the plate.

Salausa knocked a two-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Burda had an RBI single to put the first Pack run on the board. With Burda at first, Gutierrez singled putting two runners on with two outs and Mello came up to bat. Mello then hit a single through the left side to score Burda but a line drive and a fly ball caught ended the inning, 3-2 SDSU.

The teams battled the next five innings, both leaving significant number of runners on base.; San Diego State left 11 while Nevada left six. Neither team could push any runs across home plate and the final straw was a line drive caught to end the game in the Aztecs favor.

Up next for Nevada is a road trip to Fresno, Calif. to take on the Bulldogs in a three-game Mountain West series starting Friday, April 12 at 6 pm PT. There will be a live stream and live stats available for fans.
