Story Links

Reno, Nev. – Nevada (13-11) dropped its second contest of the season to Grand Canyon (12-12) on Wednesday afternoon at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park 8-2. Joshua Zamora homered for the third game in a row, belting a two-run bomb in the seventh inning.

Nevada will face Air Force this weekend at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park for a three-game Mountain West Series. Tickets are on sale online or by calling (775) 348-PACK.

Shane Gustafson earned his first start of the season, and pitched five innings with six strikeouts and only one earned run allowed. In relief, Cooper Powell pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning, as the Nevada pitching staff retired 13 batters in a row at one point.

Junior Jaylon McLaughlin had a big day for the Wolf Pack, going 3-for-3 and making two spectacular defensive plays out in center field. He came a home run short of the cycle, as he hit a single, a double, and a triple on the afternoon.

The Lopes plated a run off an RBI-double in the second inning, and neither team scored again until the seventh inning. With Julian Boyd on third, who had two hits on the day, Zamora cranked his team-high sixth homerun of the season out to left field to give Nevada a 2-1 lead.

GCU took over in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring seven runs total and five in the eighth to retake the lead. The Lopes ended the game with an 8-2 victory, as the Pack went three up, three down in the final two innings.

This weekend's series will have radio calls by Alex Margulies on Friday and Sunday, and TJ Sarbaker on Saturday. The series will be broadcast on 94.1 FM/1450 AM with a live stream available on the Mountain West Network.
