Offense lifts Nevada over Marist in doubleheader sweep

RENO, Nev. - The Nevada softball team moves to 17-9 in regular season with two wins over Marist College today in doubleheader action. The Pack beat the Red Foxes, 8-2 in the first game and then 4-2 in the second.

Julia Jensen pitched a complete 7.0 inning game in the first,  with four hits and just one earned run in her appearance. The sophomore is now 7-1 on the year. Kendall Fritz started in the second game and also pitched a complete game with 7.0 innings. The freshman only gave up two runs with six strikeouts, giving her 70 K's on the year and is now 5-3.

Today was filled with high caliber, extra bases offense that the Pack has been waiting for. Junior Sierra Mello was nearly perfect at the plate, going 5-for-7 with two RBI, four runs and two of the hits being triples. Junior Sadaria McAlister was also close to perfect going 6-for-7 in the box and tallied her own triple with two RBI, three runs and a stolen base.

Joining Mello and McAlister was freshman Dallas Millwood who hit her third home run of the season in game one with four RBI while sophomore Ashley Salausa went 3-for-3 in the second game with one run, two RBI and a double to help round out the multiple game the Pack had.

In the first game, the Red Foxes led the Pack, 2-0 before a triple from Mello scored Lauren Gutierrez and was followed by a single from McAlister that allowed Mello to come home and tied it up 2-2. Then Mello and McAlister decided to hit back-to-back triples and take the Nevada lead, 4-2. A Millwood home run busted the game open and took the 6-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Millwood continued in the bottom of the sixth with a two RBI double to score Mello and McAlister and secure the win, 8-2.

In the second game, the third inning was the standout for the Pack who scored three of its four runs in the bottom half. Salausa started the scoring with a two RBI single, scoring none other than Mello and McAlister and then Kwynn Warner was brought home on a single from Danielle Lew

Fritz worked in the seventh inning with two on and two outs to get the final strikeout and the final out of the game, 4-2, in favor of the Pack.

Nevada now hits the road and will spend three days in Missoula, Montana to play the University of Montana in a three-game series, Thursday- Saturday.
