Explosive bats seal series win over Utah State

Three home runs secure rubber match

RENO, Nev. - The collective effort from the Wolf Pack lifted the team to an 11-2 win over the Utah State Aggies in six innings. Nevada is now 15-9, 2-1 on the season heading into a non-conference week of competition.

The bats for the Pack were explosive with eight of the nine in the lineup tallying at least one hit. Sierra Mello and Dallas Millwood had multi-hit game for themselves as well as Mello having a multi-run game. The junior was just one of three different players to tally their first home runs of the season. Sophomore Ashley Salausa and redshirt junior Kwynn Warner also had their first.

Senior Kali Sargent got the start and picked up right where she left off from yesterdays game with five strikeouts, to bring her weekend total to 20. She moved to 4-5 on the season with the win in today's contest all while only allowing one earned run.

Nevada held Utah State off the board in the first inning and had their own run with an RBI double from Millwood to score Sadaria McAlister from second, after she had stolen a base in the previous play. The Aggies tied it up and actually gained the lead after putting up a single run in each of the second and third innings, 2-1.

In the bottom of the third inning though the Pack took back the momentum by way of a Mello double, a McAlister single and a double from Millwood. The game hit a lull in the fourth inning with a quick six outs before the top of the fifth inning happened.

The Aggies had the bases loaded with two outs and Sargent was out front in a 0-2 count but the Aggies third baseman came back to a full 3-2 count before Sargent caught her looking and stranded all three with no damage.

Nevada busted the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth with six runs on four hits that were supported by a Salausa two RBI home run and a Mello two RBI home run. Nevada was up 9-2 heading into the sixth but that lead just was not enough for Warner who launched a two RBI home run for herself to take the win 11-2 for the Pack.

This is a busy week for the Wolf Pack as the team hosts Marist College on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. PT before traveling to Missoula, Mont. for a three game series with the University of Montana on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
