Reno, Nev. – After being out-hit for the first time this season, the Nevada baseball team (6-2) dropped its home-opening contest against Washington State (3-6) on Thursday afternoon 16-2. The Wolf Pack will face the Cougars for the second contest of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Dalton Gomez (0-1) suffered the loss for the Pack, as Zane Mills (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after pitching 2.2 hitless innings. Nevada was held to six hits compared to WSU's 16.

The game started out close, after WSU put up one run in the first inning and Nevada was able to match it on a Daniel Perry RBI-single that drove in Kaleb Foster. The Cougars grabbed one more run in the second, and a two-error filled fourth inning by Nevada led to four more runs scoring for Washington State to give them a 6-1 lead. It was the first game this season that Nevada committed multiple errors, finishing with four.

Weston Hatten, batting a team-high .458 average this season, drove in the Pack's only other run of the game on a solo home run in the fourth inning to make the score 6-2. The Cougars' would go on to score 10 unanswered to end the game with a 16-2 victory.

No one on Nevada recorded more than one hit, but designated hitter Otis Statum Jr. finished 1-for-1 at the plate with a single and a walk. Nevada gave up a season-high 16 runs today after only allowing 19 through its first seven games. Eight of WSU's runs came in the seventh and eighth innings thanks to a couple of two-run home runs.
